Electrochem’s battery solutions are trusted on critical oceanographic missions from acoustic pingers to salinity meters, from unmanned gliders to tsunami warning buoys.
With a vast portfolio of
rechargeable and
non-rechargeable battery chemistries to offer, including lithium, nickel, lead acid and more, designing unique solutions for oceanographic deployments is our expertise. Electrochem understands the size, weight, temperature, life, safety and durability specifications that our customers require when launching crucial oceanographic surveying operations.
Major oceanographic research institutions and
OEMs trust Electrochem again and again for their battery needs.

Powering
a Milestone
When a record was on the line, Rutgers'
University students knew they could trust Electrochem's lithium cells to power their robotic
ocean glider, charged with making the
world's first transatlantic crossing. Battery power was
critical to collect data that will help scientists better
understand and model the ocean, which eventually will provide
them with better information to answer questions regarding fish
stocks and the interaction of the ocean with the global climate
system.

Designing a Power Pack
Our oceanographic surveying customers need potent, reliable power in a condensed space. In this application, Electrochem’s engineers configured 36 BCX Series cells in a half circle, two of which fit into a full circle that threads through an ocean buoy rod. The cells are potted halfway for structural integrity while in use, but with less overall weight. This design allows the lithium content of each individual unit to remain under the customer’s specified maximum threshold, a perfect design for their application requirements.
